Liberty Bell “Libby”

Cancer: Hemangiosarcoma of the spleen.

Liberty Bell “Libby” was born in Alabama and made an addition to us as a puppy. My son pretty much raised her because of our work schedules.

Libby was a very energetic and loving pup that lasted her lifetime. Libby enjoyed running with me during early morning and snuggling up close to you when stretched out on the floor to watch a movie. She was always at your side with her nose in your lap. She loved her “licky ball” and brought it to us frequently looking for a generous scoop of peanut butter. We would tease her because she sounded like Darth Vader breathing through it.

About 5 years into her life, Libby moved to be with our son who joined the Airforce (Offutt) in Omaha. I missed them both very much but was comforted knowing they had each other again. It was always so wonderful making a trip to visit them both.

Doug took Libby everywhere with him, the two were inseparable. I would often receive pictures of Libby curled up in my son’s bed saying “lazy day again today”; her favorite spot by far.

Last week I visited them both and so thankful now that I took the trip for my birthday weekend. ust a couple days after I got back home, my son called me and said he got home from work and found Libby laying down and breathing heavily. She also had a distended abdomen, but still interested in taking a ride in my son’s car. But this would be her last ride; as the Pet Urgent Care center’s Vet had a suspicion what was happening. After an X-ray, it confirmed a large cancerous tumor had been growing in Libby’s spleen and had ruptured. Libby was hemorrhaging and a decision had to be made quickly. It was probably one of the most difficult decisions our son has had to make in his life.

The Vet carefully explained the limited options and grave outlook. Warmy embraced by our son, Libby then drifted into a peaceful deep sleep.

Loved dearly and forever remembered.
