Meet Huntress & Taffy!

GRRIN has two very special dogs in foster care that we would like to adopt together. Huntress and Taffy’s bios are below – they are quite the pair and have come so far in foster care – check out their before and after photos! If you are considering adoption, please note:

  • Do you have a physical fence and is the fence attached to your home so that a dog can safely access the yard?
  • Do you plan to keep the dog inside when you are not at home?
  • Do you plan to have the dog live inside the house and be a part of the family?
  • Can you afford to spend upwards of $1000 per year to cover the standard medical costs for a large dog which include year-round heartworm/parasite treatment, annual vaccinations, and emergency vet expenses?

If you answered “yes” to these questions and would like to learn more about adoption, call our Goldline at 402-330-6680 and a volunteer will help you begin the application process.

About Huntress (7) & Taffy (5):

Huntress and Taffy right after entering foster care.

Huntress and Taffy now – look at those smiles!

I’m Huntress, but many people call me “Mama.” I am 7 years old, about 60 pounds, and living a wonderful life since I came into foster care with GRRIN. My daughter, Taffy, and I hadn’t been around other people, in a house, or with other dogs (except to have puppies) before moving into the foster home. All the new sounds, smells and people were very frightening at first. But we got petted and loved and fed food in bowls with extra treats every day! Once we felt safe in the house and yard, we started going for walks. Who knew leashes could lead you on fun adventures!

Being petted and cuddled is my favorite thing. I will look into your eyes for a long time when you give me attention. I still react to noises more than Taffy since I am a protector. If a dog barks up the street, I let them know I’m here! I will bark and show my teeth at first to a new dog just to let them know I’m the mama and I have rules. Once they know what I will put up with, then we all get along fine.

Taffy might be a little braver at first and likes to play more than me, but we are very close. We behave well at home when our foster mom leaves (up to 4 hours), but we like it best if someone can be around during the day. Being the mama means I have responsibilities, but I love being a house dog with kind people around me.

Hi, everybody! I’m Taffy, and I have learned so much since I came into foster care with GRRIN. Living in a house is amazing!! I love my warm bed and sleep in it all night.  I like to explore around the house and yard as well as when we go on walks. It takes me a minute to get used to new sounds, skills, and people. But I love to be petted and cuddled when I get to know you.

My foster mom laughs when I watch other dogs on the television. (Where do they go?!?)  We all celebrated when I mastered getting in and out of the car and going up and down stairs. I’m happy to fetch balls and toys that you throw as well as chase the squirrels and rabbits out of the yard. What fun it is to run after them! Usually, you will find me carrying a toy around in my mouth. Once I get to know other dogs, I also like to wrestle and play with them.

I’m very close to my mom, Huntress (AKA “Mama”), but I feel safe and happy with my person for some independent adventures, too. I’m 5 years old in June, a happy loving girl, about 60 pounds, and full of fun and energy.

GRRIN & Grapes Fundraiser! July 22nd

Thanks to everyone for participating in the Vino Mas wine tasting fundraiser! You raised $845 in one afternoon. Those funds will pay for veterinary care for GRRIN’s foster dogs. We’re looking forward to scheduling more of these gatherings, so stay tuned for the next wine tasting.

Come and enjoy an afternoon of wine and beer tasting (or soda!) at Vino Mas. Admission is $20 per person and includes 5 wines and 3 beers to sample. The event is also family friendly, as kids and those who don’t drink alcohol can enjoy a sampling of 5 different sodas for $10.

Volunteers Needed!

Golden Retriever Rescue in Nebraska (GRRIN) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose primary goal is to provide a resource for people who need to surrender their Golden Retriever.  We have an immediate need for some key leadership roles within our organization:

  • Transportation Coordinator – tasks include:
    • Notifying the transport team (transport volunteers) that a dog is ready to be transported to a foster home
    • Relay pertinent information on the dog to the transporter
    • Help in coordination of transport if needed (i.e. assist with initial vet appointment, assist with introduction of dogs if foster home has a resident dog if necessary/requested)
    • Once dog has been transported and is successfully placed in the foster home, gather paperwork and photograph(s) and prepare final paperwork. Send all documentation to Rescue Team
  • Intake Coordinator (additional/shared) – tasks include:
    • Call surrendering owner to verify they want to surrender and assess timeline needed to accomplish
    • Arrange for a volunteer to conduct an assessment if time allows, to ensure dog is a Golden or Golden mix, personality traits, etc.
    • Contact Foster Coordinator to arrange foster home
    • Contact Transport Coordinator or members of the transport team to arrange transport
  • Foster Coordinator (additional/shared) – tasks include:
    • Make calls to find fosters for incoming dogs
    • Make calls to fosters to see how the dog is doing while in foster care
    • Recruiting new fosters and calling them to explain the foster process
    • Getting foster agreements signed and placed into the “cloud”

You will NEVER be left to fend for yourself. There will be training for these positions and on-going support until you feel fully comfortable in the role you take on.

GRRIN can also always use additional people for home visits for those that would like to foster or adopt, in-home visits for dogs to be surrendered, transport volunteers and foster homes.  Please contact GRRIN at volunteer@grrin.org to volunteer for any of these positions or for additional information.

GRRIN Calendar 2024 – Submit your photos!

It’s time to send us your photos! GRRIN’s calendar committee is putting together another fabulous calendar for 2024 and they will need to choose from your photos. Calendars will be available for purchase at GRRIN’s Gold Rush celebration on October 1st.

More than one dog can be in your submitted photos but Goldens only please!

Will I get the photo returned to me after the selections are made?

ALL photos submitted become the property of Golden Retriever Rescue in Nebraska.  Make sure you create a copy before sending.

Marley’s Journey! – An Inspiring Story

    Marley’s Journey!

*Special thanks to Bow Wow Buddies Foundation for granting funds to GRRIN for Marley’s care!

Marley was found wandering as a stray by animal control officers on October 20, 2022, and taken to the Midlands Humane Society in Council Bluffs.  GRRIN was notified and following a week in Midlands care, GRRIN volunteers brought him into the GRRIN family. The intake took place on October 27th, and he was placed in foster care following the initial veterinary visit.  The veterinarian estimated his age to be 10 years old.

    From the foster family:

Marley came into our home on October 27th and immediately attached himself to mom. He was curious and friendly to dad, our two dogs , and even our two cats.  He is a wonderful dog with good manners and is very gentle, and took very little time settling in. We realized almost immediately that all of us were smitten by this sweet boy and he obviously was home. Marley had been placed on multiple medications at the shelter, and we continued those prescribed for an ear infection and hot spots on his skin. At his first visit to our family veterinarian, Dr. Courtney Knott at the American Animal Hospital, he was started on new medications that began a nearly four month journey leading eventually to ear surgery on February 25th.  We are so grateful for the generosity of GRRIN and the skill and caring that all of the veterinarians and their staff demonstrated while taking care of our awesome dog.

    The Procedure:

Dr. Eric Wilson of the Animal Emergency and Specialty Services in Mission, Kansas performed a total ear canal ablation and bulla osteotomy. This surgery involves the complete removal of the ear canal and tympanic bulla (middle ear), leaving only the ear flap (pinna) remaining.  This procedure requires the use of general anesthesia. Marley is deaf in his right ear now because of the removal of these organs, but the surgery was necessary because of the severity and duration of the infection, and also because the infection was resistant to most antibiotics. He is recovering nicely at home with no serious adverse effects.

      In Memory of Thad Tinder

GRRIN recently lost a long-time volunteer, Thad Tinder. His wife Janie has shared a tribute to Thad. This wonderful couple has donated many, many hours of their time to rescuing Goldens. The family has suggested memorials to GRRIN in lieu of flowers.

      Dear GRRIN Volunteers and Friends,

I wanted to let you know that my husband and fellow Golden lover, passed away on September 22nd.

He and I have been long-time members of GRRIN from the early nineties volunteering for home visits, transport and many more activities. We personally adopted first mother Brandy (99-24) and then her daughter Julie (00-12) as our first foray into golden ownership. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

We loved every moment that we spent with all of you and the satisfaction of volunteering brought Thad immense pride.

Please know his Celebration of Life service will be held on October 29, 2022, Saturday, at 11:00 am at Peace Presbyterian Church, 333 South 204th Street in Elkhorn, Nebraska.

Thank you for being such a big part of Thad’s enjoyment of this organization.

      Much kindness,

      Janie Tinder

We would like to extend a huge round of a-paws to everyone who has walked over the years to save homeless animals and give them the second chance they deserve.

Gold Rush 2018! Sunday, October 7

THANK YOU to everyone who braved the rain on Sunday to attend Gold Rush! We always say the event goes on “rain or shine” but we had to put those words into practice by moving most of the activities indoors. Dogs weren’t allowed in the clubhouse so we set up “pup” tents to keep the dogs and their handlers out of the rain.

Special thanks to the vendors who came out to share dog treats and cool swag:

      GRRIN Transport Video

GRRIN is an all-volunteer organization – we couldn’t rescue Golden Retrievers without dedicated volunteers! People often ask about the different tasks that occur in rescue. Now you can follow volunteer Aaron Barnes on a transport mission to pick up GRRIN dog Charlie, just click here to watch the video.

      Wine & Howl – June 2

Thanks for coming out to support Lincoln Animal Ambassadors at Deer Springs Winery! Check out pictures on their Facebook page.

Wine & Howl brings together all the best parts of summer for a fantastic afternoon event! Bring your dog, a blanket or lawn chair and join us on June 2nd for an afternoon of dogs, food, wine and music. If you are looking for a new companion, many of the area’s rescue organizations will be bringing pets looking for their forever homes.

You won’t want to miss the raffle prizes, featuring pet, wine, and decor gift baskets from all around the area. With just a suggested donation of $8 to attend; there are just too many reasons you have got to be there! The wine will start pouring at 11AM and the bands will play until 5PM.

Omaha Gives! 2018 & Pizza West Celebration – May 23

Thank you GRRIN supporters for your outstanding participation in Omaha Gives! We raised $6695 with the help of many generous donors. Your donations will help us cover medical care needed for GRRIN foster dogs.

In 2017 the majority of our funds covered veterinary expenses – over $500 for each of the 28 dogs we rescued. Extreme vet care included treating severe dental disease, allergies and ear infections, thyroid imbalance, lump and bump removal, and palliative care. Something as simple as a dental cleaning will cost approximately $500, and even more if teeth need to be extracted. Eight of our foster dogs were eight years of age and older, classified as seniors. We are extremely grateful to have the resources to care for these Golden oldies with loving foster homes and the ability to pay for all of their medical expenses so they can live comfortably in their later years.

During the 24 hours of giving, Omaha Gives raised $7.3 million for the community and over 960 participating non-profits. The Omaha Community Foundation has brought this outstanding opportunity to the metro for six years and we are so excited to be a part of it!

Thanks also to the humans and canines who enjoyed the gorgeous – but warm – evening and came out to Pizza West to celebrate Omaha’s biggest giving day!

Or, make your donation on Wednesday the 23rd. The giving begins at midnight with a minimum $10 donation and hourly drawings and prizes make your donations go further. So start gathering your circles and get ready for another great big give-together!

      Annual Meeting & Volunteer Luncheon!

Thanks for coming! Oh my dog, over 40 friends of GRRIN joined us with their favorite Golden Retrievers for an awesome lunch and informative meeting. Board members were voted in, our finances are healthy (translation: we can do great things for foster dogs!), and our rescue process is running smoothly.

One of the challenges we are facing this year is that GRRIN is not getting calls from people who need help re-homing their dogs. The board has worked tirelessly to get our group’s mission out to the public, but sometimes word of mouth is the best way to share GRRIN’s 26-year devotion to helping dogs in need. Please let others know about our mission to find dogs permanent new homes, whether it’s talking to your work buddies and neighbors or mentioning GRRIN on Facebook or Twitter (@GRRINebraska). If you know someone that needs help, they can send an email to info@grrin.org or call 402-330-6680.

The other topic of business was planning for our annual celebration, Gold Rush. This year’s event takes place on Sunday, October 7th, at the Offutt Base Lake Park. Please send an email to volunteer@grrin.org if you’d like to offer ideas, volunteer or make a donation.

Keep an eye on our website calendar so you don’t miss a single gathering in 2018. We don’t always have foster dogs at meet and greets, but we welcome the opportunity to chat with you and meet your favorite canine.

Thank you again for supporting GRRIN year-round – we couldn’t do it without you!

Woo-hoo (that’s “woof woof” if you’re a canine) – our annual meeting is rolling around! Join GRRIN as we celebrate a great year in rescue!

      • Lunch provided by GRRIN – yum, it’s Mangia Italiana!
      • Family and friendly dogs welcome!
      • Treats for attending dogs donated by Woof & Whiskers!

Yes, we have a lot of exclamation points because we think this is one of our best events of the year. Great company, great food, great dogs, great conversation about dogs, what else can you ask for? (Let’s face it, we’re crazy about our dogs.)

If you’re a volunteer, you deserve a free lunch and a big thank you from our hosting board members. If you just want to hang out as a friend of GRRIN, we’d love to have you (we won’t pressure you to sign up for anything). Please RSVP if you would like to attend by sending a quick email to volunteer@grrin.org.

We’ll also have a very short business meeting:

      • Vote on open board positions
      • Review finance and rescue reports
      • Pre-planning for Gold Rush will be discussed and GRRIN would love to hear your ideas
      To recap:
Fun for dogs and people! Bring your Goldens (or any friendly dog on a leash). Lunch will be served.
RSVP 402-330-6680 or volunteer@grrin.org so we can make sure we have enough goodies to eat!
Please provide your name and the number that will be attending.

      Thank you, Woof & Whiskers!

      GRRIN dog Rocky wins award!

Congratulations to Rocky and his fur-parents, Jim and Mary Jane Fitch, who just received the 2018 Nebraska Veterinary Medicine Association’s Animal Hall of Fame award in January! Even more exciting, they visited the State Capitol where Lt. Governor Mike Foley presented a proclamation from Governor Pete Ricketts highlighting March 5, 2018 as Animal Hall of Fame Recognition Day in Nebraska.

Rocky, born with a deformed front paw, was adopted by Jim and Mary Jane in 2014. After an incredible journey to get a prosthetic device for Rocky, they had him certified as an Angel Dog at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, where he provides comfort and joy to many patients.

      Newsletter Editor Needed!

Are you proficient using Adobe’s InDesign program? GRRIN is looking for a volunteer that can produce four newsletters per year. Our communications chair supplies most of the content and another volunteer is responsible for putting them in the mail. The previous editor estimates it takes about 12 hours to complete each newsletter. If you’d like to learn more about working with GRRIN, please send an email to newsletter@grrin.org!
